I awake

before the

final hush
of the night’s

lassitude

drains away
thicker than

water and

simplicity
of sunlight

knifed through blinds

why did I
dream about

landed fish

fins flapping
in the dirt

the wings of

flightless birds
so many

useless things

gathering
