On the rushing river’s rough riverbed

the rock grows smooth but doesn’t mourn the loss

of its edges.  It’ll participate

in the end of the universe and that’s

alright.  In maybe forty thousand years

it will become a sentry for the sun

beneath the bright belly of a lizard.

Perhaps someday the rock will play guitar

at the funeral of the stars, singing,

we are not in the black tunnel, we are

the black tunnel—when we go through ourselves

anything is possible.  Maybe one

quadrillion years later the old folks home

on Twelfth Street will finally be approved,

and the young will start slowly shuffling in

the near-dead, their soft, spotted hands reaching

headfirst towards the end.  Think, the peace that could

come with such an end!  It calls through the rocks

of the city and the rush of rivers:

in Time’s water we will all become smooth.
