The air conditioner was pushed in

while we were gone our home

was invaded a pile of leaves that blew through

the window we check to see what was stolen there isn’t

anything of value here it’s all luxury our lives

are luxury all of our lives a luxury

to observe the natural order of things the leaves falling

from the trees like cloth bits of fake snow dumped

slowly from a bucket in the beams above the actors

nothing is missing just the change jar we don’t

even use quarters anymore we enjoy

the etchings of various landmarks and parks and the new series

of coins dedicated to great moments

in American battle we are lucky we’ve always

been lucky to see light is luck

and to see light alter in the dusk is luck a leech

clinging tight to the inside of a thigh not even noticed not

an itch who says it’s all too fragile to change

one glass cylinder removed from the structure

my body feels full of energy but empty of thought

if we’ve touched one ocean we’ve

touched ‘em all when my brother goes back to war there will be

many support groups for his wife my other brother

is not married who will hold us up who will quarter us

one word could break us swaying onto our

backs on invisible current who will steer

the trees they’ve become something uncontrollable
