The Powerhouse Arena, a beautiful art gallery / bookshop in DUMBO, got their asses kicked pretty hard in the Sandy Superstorm. Flood waters destroyed tubs of children’s books, boxes of event copies. stationary, promo materials, and also the front window of the gallery.
It ain’t pretty.
What is pretty, however, is all the support they receiving from the literary community. Without flood insurance, Powerhouse has to pay for their damages [around $50,000 (FIFTY THOUSAND!! :O)] themselves. They need some cash.
Of course, you’re all nice people, so you’ve already donated all your spare pennies to the Red Cross or some such humanitarian organization. However, if you can scare up a few more cents (check the couch cushions and old jackets), you could do worse than donating them to a bookstore that’s been invaded by the mortal enemy of books.
Also, if you’re a publisher or indie author, they need stock. Obviously, bookstores need books to sell. The Arena is holding a fundraising bookfair on the Nov. 17th. called #SandyHatesBooks, from 12-8 P.M.
We’ll be sending a small care package of Ampersand Books releases for the bookfair. You should, too. If a bunch of curmudgeonly misanthropes like us can help out, so can you. Contact Julie Buntin at email@example.com to find out how you can help.
And, of course, if you’re in the area, drop by the #SandyHatesBooks bookfair on the 17th to finish and buy something.
