The sky is everyone’s private property

but the ruby and emerald lights

so elaborately carved

into the curved silver underside

are just ours

hereafter whatever happens

whether it’s a half-brother in jail

or a nephew in rehab

you’ll be my emerging nation

and I’ll be your development loan

and sometimes possibly vice versa

This poem originally appeared in our world-within-a-world, Volume II of The Ampersand Review.
